Real-World Results

Wondering what kind of results you can expect to see? Let’s take a look at the real-life story of two pet parents and their pups who were connected through the Relatives feature.

We’ve got a match!

Trey Poe and Frazier

When Trey Poe’s dog Frazier was tested with Wisdom Panel, the results revealed that he had a close relative in the system – a brother! Here’s what Trey had to say about the experience:

“We were so excited to see the ancestry added to the profile, and once we saw Frazier had a brother in the system, we couldn’t wait for a photo.” – Trey Poe (Frazier’s Dad)

Chip Hoffa and Jake

Frazier’s brother is a pup named Jake, whose pet parent is Chip Hoffa. And as it turns out, Jake and Frazier look strikingly similar! Here’s what Chip had to say:

“The most remarkable thing just happened! Using Wisdom Panel, I was able to find out my dog’s birthday and that he has almost an identical brother!… The resemblance is incredible.” – Chip Hoffa (Jake’s Dad)

The results showed that 46% of Frazier and Jake’s DNA is shared from the same ancestors, confirming that they are, in fact, brothers. A breed comparison also showed that the brothers have three breeds in common: American Staffordshire Terrier, Boxer, and Beagle.

How Does Wisdom Panel’s Relatives Feature Work?

Wisdom Panel’s genetic relative match is powered by the world’s largest dog breed database. More than 99.9% of the 3 million dogs they’ve tested have genetic relatives in this database. And chances are, yours does too!

While decoding your dog’s DNA, Wisdom Panel automatically searches for matches to other dogs in their vast database. Once a match is found, the system allows you to compare DNA results, view photos, and more. This means you can learn all about your dog’s extended pack – the littermates, parents, distant cousins, and other relatives that make up their genetic family.

The Relatives Experience

It couldn’t be easier to use the Relatives feature and learn more about your canine companion. Simply visit the Relatives tab of your dog’s Wisdom Panel results and dig into the data. There are three types of relationships identified by the test: close, extended, and distant. Let’s take a quick look at each of these so you know exactly what they mean.

Close Relatives: These are the dogs that share 20% or more DNA with your pup. Parents, offspring, siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents are all included in this category.

Extended Relatives: To be classified as an extended relative, a dog must share between 5% and 19% of their DNA with your pup. This category includes first cousins and the “greats” (like great-grandparents, great-nephews, and great-aunts). Half-uncles, half-aunts, half-nieces, and half-nephews are also part of this group.

Distant Relatives: Now we’re onto the dogs that have 1-4% DNA in common with your four-legged friend. This large family group includes any relatives that are beyond first cousins. You may be surprised at how many of your dog’s distant relatives Wisdom Panel can identify!
