How do you get a copy of your dog’s medical records?

Dr. Debra – I’m moving and want to get a copy of my dog’s medical records. I called and talk to someone that worked in the kennel and she told me I couldn’t get a copy. Do you have any recommendations on how to get a copy?

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote that you are moving and want a copy of your dog’s medical records. When you called the clinic – they told you no.

In my experience, getting your medical records is not a problem. I’d recommend calling back and talking to a receptionist or practice manager and telling them about your situation. Alternatively, find a vet in your new location and ask that clinic to call your clinic for the records. People moving and asking for their records is very common and generally NOT a problem. We fax or mail records to other clinics all the time if someone moves.
