Salmonella Tip

Up to 90 percent of reptiles shed salmonella bacteria in their feces. People who own or handle reptiles should know that salmonella is contagious to humans and is transmitted when reptile fecal material comes in contact with food preparation surfaces, bathing areas or the mouth. Salmonella can result in diarrhea, pneumonia or even meningitis. Reptiles are not recommended for families with children under 5 years of age. Always thoroughly wash your hand after handling your reptile or his cage.
